BYD Dominates 36% of Indonesia’s Electric Vehicle Market in One Year
JAKARTA – PT BYD Motor Indonesia has taken the Indonesian electric vehicle (EV) market by storm, claiming a whopping 36% share with the sale of 15,433 electric vehicles in 2024 alone.
BYD made its official foray into the electric passenger vehicle segment in 2024, marking just one year of operations in Indonesia. The company introduced four EV models to the market: the BYD Seal sedan, BYD Dolphin hatchback, BYD Atto 3 midsize SUV, and the latest addition, the electric MPV BYD M6.
President Director of BYD Indonesia, Eagle Zhao, expressed delight at the positive reception of BYD’s EV products in Indonesia. The BYD M6 emerged as the top-selling model in the country, with 6,125 units sold, followed by the Seal with 4,829 units. The Atto 3 sold 3,292 units, while the Dolphin saw 1,187 units fly off the shelves.
Challenges and Solutions
Despite BYD’s impressive market dominance, the company faced hurdles in delivering units to consumers, as seen in a delivery delay in June. To address this issue, BYD adopted a more personalized approach with customers, ultimately resolving the problem successfully.
Market Growth and Support
While the automotive sector at large grappled with challenges and a slowdown in demand in 2024, the electric vehicle segment witnessed significant growth. The EV market share surged from 1.7% in 2023 to 5% in 2024, a clear indicator of the industry’s upward trajectory.
According to Zhao, this growth wouldn’t have been possible without robust support from the Indonesian government and various stakeholders committed to advancing the electric vehicle industry and ecosystem in the country.
Future Prospects
During a media gathering in Jakarta on Monday evening, January 20, 2025, Zhao emphasized Indonesia’s importance as a key market for BYD. He attributed the success of BYD’s models in Indonesia to their advanced technology, impressive performance, and affordable pricing.
Looking ahead, Zhao sees more opportunities for BYD to reach an even broader market segment. Tomorrow, BYD will unveil its premium electric vehicle, the BYD Denza D9, to Indonesian consumers.
In light of BYD’s remarkable performance in Indonesia’s EV market, one can’t help but wonder about the future landscape of electric vehicles in the country. With BYD’s continued innovation and customer-centric approach, the electrifying journey ahead promises to be one filled with possibilities and opportunities for all stakeholders involved.
