Community Heroes in Bima: Pregnant Woman Carried Over Damaged Road, One Twin Dies

In a heartwarming yet tragic incident in Desa Waduramba, Kecamatan Palibelo, Kabupaten Bima, a video capturing the heroic actions of local residents has gone viral on social media. The footage shows a group of men carrying a pregnant woman, who was in labor, using makeshift tools like bamboo sticks and sarongs to transport her to the nearest medical center.

The men, visibly struggling and sweating, navigated the treacherous and damaged road with immense difficulty. Nafisa, a resident who shared the video on her Facebook account, described how the condition of the road in their village had long been inadequate for vehicular traffic. “The road is so damaged that vehicles can’t even reach our village,” she lamented when contacted by Tribun Lombok on Friday, January 24, 2025.

Nafisa also revealed that the woman being carried, identified as Farida, gave birth to twin babies. Tragically, one of the newborns did not survive. “The second child passed away yesterday evening,” she disclosed. Nafisa further noted that similar incidents of residents carrying pregnant women in need of medical assistance have been a common occurrence in their village for a long time. “Yes, it’s been a customary practice for us to carry pregnant women in labor,” she added.

Challenges Faced by Rural Communities

The harrowing journey depicted in the viral video sheds light on the challenges faced by rural communities in accessing adequate healthcare facilities. The lack of proper infrastructure, such as roads and transportation, poses a significant obstacle for individuals in remote areas, especially pregnant women requiring urgent medical attention.

Resilience and Solidarity Amidst Adversity

The actions of the men who selflessly carried Farida over the damaged road exemplify the resilience and solidarity of the community in the face of adversity. Their willingness to come together and assist a fellow resident in need underscores the importance of compassion and support within tight-knit rural communities.

Impact of Inadequate Healthcare Infrastructure

The unfortunate loss of one of Farida’s newborn twins highlights the devastating consequences that can arise from inadequate healthcare infrastructure and limited access to medical facilities. This tragic outcome underscores the urgent need for improved healthcare services and infrastructure development in rural areas to prevent similar incidents in the future.

Call for Government Intervention

As stories like Farida’s continue to surface, there is a pressing need for government intervention to address the challenges faced by rural communities in accessing essential healthcare services. Adequate funding and resources must be allocated to improve infrastructure and medical facilities in remote areas, ensuring that all individuals, regardless of location, have access to timely and quality healthcare services.
