Sunda Kelapa harbour in pictures

18/10/2026 20 photos

Sunda Kelapa is Jakarta’s historic port, known for its traditional wooden cargo vessels and its long connection with regional maritime trade. The harbour remains a working port, where colourful pinisi ships share the quays with the day-to-day movement of goods. A visit offers a chance to see the vessels at close range, from their tall masts and bowsprits to the practical work of loading, unloading and repairs.

Explore the waterfront for changing views across the boats and harbour, and look out for smaller craft among the larger ships. The port is an active workplace, not simply a viewing area, so follow local directions and keep clear of loading activity. For photographs, soft morning light can bring out the atmosphere of the harbour. Allow time to take in both the details of individual vessels and the wider port setting.
