Tribunnews: Lawyer’s Shooting in South Sulawesi Raises Concerns
TRIBUNNEWS.COM, MAKASSAR – The shooting of lawyer Rudi S Gani on New Year’s Eve 2024 has shaken the community, especially in South Sulawesi. The police are working tirelessly to uncover the perpetrator behind this tragedy. Currently, 18 witnesses, including the deceased’s wife and three construction workers at Rudi’s law office, are being questioned. Testimonies from Hj Maryam and other witnesses will be crucial in solving this case.
Rudi S Gani, a well-known lawyer in his area, was shot dead by an unknown assailant. The case gained widespread attention after Rudi’s wife, Hj Maryam, visited the Directorate of General Crime Investigation (Ditkrimum) of the South Sulawesi Regional Police on Monday (6/1/2025) to provide information and evidence related to the threats her husband received.
### Police Investigation and Evidence Collection
Maryam revealed evidence of conversations between her and her husband showing threats through WhatsApp messages before the shooting incident. In addition to witness testimonies, the police have also seized 11 air rifles from the vicinity of the crime scene. Bone Police Chief, AKBP Erwin Syah, stated that the rifles would undergo forensic laboratory analysis to establish any connection to the shooting case. The crime scene has been processed, and a reconstruction has been conducted as the focus shifts to capturing the perpetrator.
### Legal Community’s Response
Farid Mamma, a senior lawyer, expressed disappointment in the slow handling of the case by the police. He challenged the South Sulawesi Police Chief to apprehend the perpetrator within 2 weeks, emphasizing that a failure to do so would reflect poorly on the professionalism of the police force. The Police Chief, Irjen Pol Yudhiawan Wibisono, has promised that the investigative team will work diligently and professionally to resolve the case.
### Concerns Among Lawyers
Tadjuddin Rachman, Chairman of the Fact-Finding Team of the Indonesian Advocates Association (Peradi) in South Sulawesi, highlighted the seriousness of this case within the legal community. This incident marks the first shooting involving a lawyer in South Sulawesi, raising alarms among lawyers in the region. Tadjuddin revealed that while there have been terror incidents in the past, a shooting in front of family members is unprecedented. Peradi South Sulawesi has formed a special investigative team to oversee the case’s progress, demonstrating a commitment to seeking justice for Rudi S Gani.
