Crackdown on Illegal Cigarettes in Aceh Prevents Potential Loss of Rp1.2 Billion
In a recent operation in Aceh Tamiang, Aceh, authorities successfully thwarted the circulation of 1.1 million illegal cigarettes, valued at Rp1.7 billion, along the Medan-Banda Aceh highway. The Head of the Langsa Customs Office, Sulaiman, revealed that a total of 1,185,200 illegal cigarettes of various brands, including H&D Light, H&D Classic, Luffman Merah, H Mild, H&D Red, and UFO Mild, were confiscated.
The contraband goods were concealed in a truck loaded with bags of wood chippings. Two suspects, identified as AS (26) and SB (41), were also apprehended during the crackdown.
Value of Seized Goods and Potential State Revenue Saved
The estimated value of the seized items amounts to Rp1,755,276,000, with a potential state revenue loss of around Rp1,222,093,444 averted, as stated by Sulaiman on Monday (13/1/2025).
The operation unfolded following intelligence received by the Langsa Customs Office on Tuesday, January 7, 2025, regarding an impending illegal cigarette shipment passing through their jurisdiction. Subsequently, intensive surveillance was conducted by the Langsa Customs Office, leading to the interception of the suspicious truck on the Medan-Banda Aceh highway the following day. Upon inspection, authorities discovered cigarettes lacking excise stamps.
Legal Ramifications and Detainment of Suspects
Currently, the confiscated evidence and the two suspects are in custody for further investigation, with the perpetrators held at the Langsa Class II/B Correctional Facility. Under Article 54 and/or Article 55 of the Republic of Indonesia Law Number 39 of 2007 concerning Excise, the offenders face imprisonment ranging from a minimum of 1 year to a maximum of 5 years, along with fines that are at least double and up to ten times the intended excise duty payment.
The crackdown on illegal cigarettes in Aceh not only curbed the illicit trade but also safeguarded substantial state revenue. Such operations underscore the government’s commitment to combatting illegal activities that undermine public health and tax compliance, ensuring a fair market environment for all stakeholders involved.
