The Importance of Influenza Vaccination for Preventing Respiratory Infections, Especially for the Elderly
Influenza vaccination is crucial in preventing respiratory infections, particularly for the elderly and other vulnerable groups. Dr. Gatut Priyonugroho, a specialist in pulmonary and respiratory diseases, emphasized the significance of this vaccine in reducing complications associated with influenza.
Why Influenza Vaccination is Crucial
According to Dr. Gatut, while the influenza vaccine has been available for some time, it has yet to become a part of the national immunization program. He highlighted the importance of the vaccine, especially for the elderly, as the mortality rate due to influenza significantly rises in this age group. The virus can damage the respiratory tract, leaving it susceptible to secondary infections like bacteria and fungi, which may lead to intensive care unit (ICU) treatment or even death.
How Influenza Spreads and Mutates
Influenza is an airborne disease, meaning the virus is always present in the air and tends to increase during specific seasons, such as the rainy season in Indonesia. Research in other countries has shown that the virus concentration in the air during an outbreak can surge up to 100 times compared to normal seasons. Due to constant mutations, the influenza vaccine needs updating every six months. However, annual vaccination can still offer protection. The more frequent the vaccination, the stronger the body’s immunity against the influenza virus.
The Impact of Influenza Vaccination
Although the influenza vaccine does not directly shield against other diseases like Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) or COVID-19, it aids in boosting the overall immune system. With a stronger immune system, the risk of contracting various respiratory viruses decreases significantly. Despite people often underestimating the severity of influenza, especially in vulnerable groups, routine vaccination can help reduce the occurrence of more severe illnesses.
In addition to vaccination, individuals are advised to maintain good health practices by following a healthy lifestyle, washing hands regularly, wearing masks in public places, and bolstering immunity through a balanced diet and regular exercise.
Remember, protecting ourselves and those around us is a collective effort. Let’s prioritize our health and well-being by taking proactive steps to prevent the spread of infectious diseases like influenza. Stay safe and healthy!
