Trade Minister Budi Santoso Sets Rp4.8 Trillion Export Target Amid Global Challenges

JAKARTA – Trade Minister Budi Santoso has revealed that this year’s export target is facing a myriad of global challenges. The Ministry of Trade (MoT) has calculated the export targets that must be achieved during the period of 2025—2029.

Indonesia’s national exports are projected to grow by 7.1 percent in 2025, reaching 294.45 billion US dollars. When converted to Indonesian Rupiah, this amounts to approximately Rp 4,801 trillion at an exchange rate of Rp 16,305 per US dollar.

The set target takes into account various factors such as the global Gross Domestic Product (GDP), Indonesia’s GDP, exchange rates, and global commodity prices. MoT aims for accredited countries or countries with trade representation abroad to contribute the most.

In 33 accredited countries, exports in 2025 are targeted to reach 255.69 billion US dollars, increasing by 7.25 percent annually. Specifically for exports from Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) in accredited countries, a growth of 9.63 percent or a value of 19.33 billion US dollars is targeted for 2025.

Minister Budi emphasized that all these figures remain highly dynamic due to the ongoing discussions on the National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN) and the Ministry of Trade’s Strategic Plan (Renstra).

The main challenge in achieving this year’s export target stems from global uncertainty. Budi mentioned that there are many negative spillover effects, particularly in terms of economic, financial, and environmental aspects.

“The main challenge is still the high level of global uncertainty due to the numerous negative spillover effects, both economically, financially, and environmentally,” Budi stated in a written interview with Tribunnews on Sunday (February 16, 2025).

He cited the escalating geopolitical tensions in various regions, such as the Middle East, which have led to an increase in protectionist trade practices by several countries.

### Expert Opinions on Overcoming Global Challenges

In light of the complex landscape surrounding global trade, experts recommend a strategic approach to navigate the challenges and achieve the set export targets. Dr. Maya Indriana, an economist specializing in international trade, emphasizes the importance of diversification and innovation in Indonesia’s export strategy.

“Given the current global uncertainties, it is crucial for Indonesia to diversify its export markets and products. This will not only mitigate risks but also open up new opportunities for growth,” Dr. Indriana shared in a recent conference on trade policies.

Moreover, Dr. Ahmad Yusuf, a trade policy analyst, highlights the significance of enhancing competitiveness and efficiency in the export sector. “To thrive in the global market, Indonesian exporters need to focus on enhancing product quality, reducing production costs, and streamlining supply chains,” Dr. Yusuf stated during a panel discussion on trade challenges.

By incorporating expert insights and strategic recommendations, Indonesia can leverage its export potential and navigate the complex global landscape with resilience and adaptability. As Minister Budi Santoso steers the country towards its export goals, a concerted effort from all stakeholders will be vital in overcoming the challenges and seizing the opportunities that lie ahead.
