The Arab League has decided to postpone the Gaza talks, as confirmed by the Deputy Secretary-General, Hossam Zaki. The originally scheduled date of February 27th may be extended according to Zaki, who made the announcement on Egypt’s government-owned television network, ON.
Zaki pointed to Israel’s efforts to avoid the second phase of the ceasefire agreement as a reason for the postponement. He expressed concerns that this could lead to armed confrontation. The logistical challenges faced by Egypt in ensuring the presence of numerous Arab leaders at the crucial event in Saudi Arabia were also cited as a factor.
Moreover, Egypt is expected to propose a comprehensive plan for rebuilding Gaza, emphasizing the need to ensure that Palestinian residents remain in the area while reconstruction efforts continue. This comes in light of Donald Trump’s push to evict Palestinians from their homeland and have the U.S. take over the territory, a plan rejected by both Egypt and Jordan.
The main objective of the summit, according to Zaki, is to formulate a unified Arab stance on the Palestinian struggle and the issue of displacement. He views the relocation of Palestinians as an Israeli idea now supported by the U.S., underscoring the necessity of a united Arab position.
Zaki criticized the Palestinian Resistance and the Palestinian Authority during interviews, claiming that the interests of Palestine require Hamas to step aside. He also emphasized the need for reform within the Palestinian Authority to regain control of governance in Gaza.
Challenges in Ceasefire Commitment
On the other hand, Arab officials revealed that aid intended for Palestinians has accumulated at the Rafah border. Zaki accused Israeli authorities of intentionally delaying the delivery of aid, including essential equipment for clearing debris and efforts to avoid the second phase of the ceasefire agreement.
Zaki noted that these obstacles reflect a lack of commitment to the agreement, following nearly 15 months of intense mediation negotiations. The Israeli approach, he warned, could lead to a return of armed conflict as Gazans strive to rebuild their lives, highlighting a reluctance to achieve a long-term ceasefire.
In conclusion, the Arab League’s decision to postpone the Gaza talks underscores the complex dynamics at play in the region. As efforts continue to rebuild Gaza and address the needs of its residents, the importance of a unified Arab stance on the Palestinian issue remains paramount.
