Indonesian Government and WRC Promoter Sign MoU for WRC 2026 Event
In a groundbreaking move, Bambang Soesatyo, a member of the Indonesian House of Representatives and also the Chairman of the Indonesian Motor Association (IMI), revealed that a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) had been signed between IMI, the Sports and Youth Ministry’s Fund Management and Business Institution (LPDUK Kemenpora), and the World Rally Championship (WRC) Promoter. The MoU was signed to pave the way for the World Rally Championship event in Indonesia in August 2026. One of the chosen locations for this international racing event is Sumatera Utara.
Importance of the MoU
The signing of the MoU was a crucial step to strengthen the preparation and coordination between IMI, Kemenpora, and the WRC Promoter. Bambang Soesatyo emphasized the significance of this agreement in ensuring that all aspects of organizing the WRC event in Indonesia run smoothly. The continuation of the MoU is expected to not only secure scheduling allocations but also encompass cooperation in promotional, technical, and logistical aspects.
Sumatera Utara Chosen as the Venue
Bambang Soesatyo, also known as Bamsoet, explained why Sumatera Utara was selected as the location for the WRC event. The province has a rich history of hosting international motorsport events, including the World Rally Championship in 1996-1997, Trans Sumatera Rally, and Asia Pacific Rally. This experience provides a solid foundation for managing the larger WRC event in 2026.
Infrastructural Development for WRC
One of the fundamental aspects of preparing for the WRC event is the development of infrastructure. The Indonesian government, through Kemenpora and IMI, has committed to meeting all mechanical and technical requirements set by the WRC Promoter. The circuits and routes for the racers must adhere to international standards specified by the WRC.
In addition to ensuring the comfort of participants, providing supporting facilities such as accommodation for racers and teams, media centers, and public viewing areas is crucial. These facilities not only benefit the WRC event but also contribute significantly to the local tourism sector and the long-term development of the local community, as highlighted by Bamsoet.
This historic collaboration between the Indonesian government and the WRC Promoter marks a significant milestone in Indonesia’s motorsport landscape, promising economic, social, and tourism benefits for the nation.
