The DIY Provincial Government, in collaboration with the DIY Regional Police, has introduced a state-of-the-art traffic monitoring and security surveillance system based on a smart city framework. This system is operated from the Back Office Smart Province located at the Unit IX, 3rd Floor of the UHP Building in the Kepatihan Complex in Yogyakarta.
The Back Office Smart Province serves as a centralized hub for monitoring both vehicle and pedestrian traffic, as well as enhancing security through the use of artificial intelligence (AI) technology. With 381 surveillance cameras or CCTV strategically positioned throughout the DIY region, this initiative aims to streamline traffic management and ensure public safety.
Governor of DIY, Sri Sultan Hamengku Buwono X, recently visited the facility to assess the efficiency of the system in monitoring the movement of people and vehicles across Yogyakarta. The visit took place on Thursday, February 13, 2025. Sultan emphasized the collaborative efforts between the DIY Provincial Government and the DIY Regional Police in designing and implementing this advanced monitoring system.
“I came here to see the results of the surveillance setup for monitoring traffic in Yogyakarta. The cooperation between the DIY Provincial Government and the DIY Regional Police has led to the creation of an effective system that allows us to monitor both pedestrian and vehicular traffic seamlessly,” Sultan remarked during his visit.
Highlighting the capabilities of the Back Office Smart Province, Sultan expressed confidence in the technology’s ability to control traffic movements across the entire DIY region. The system enables real-time monitoring of accidents, congestion, and other traffic-related incidents through the network of CCTV cameras integrated into the facility.
In addition to traffic management, the surveillance cameras installed at the Back Office Smart Province play a crucial role in monitoring criminal activities on the roads. Sultan underscored the multifaceted benefits of centralizing CCTV monitoring at the facility, emphasizing its significance in enhancing overall security and law enforcement efforts in the region.
The Chief of the DIY Regional Police, Police Inspector General Suwondo Nainggolan, emphasized that the cutting-edge technology utilized in the system is pivotal in supporting preemptive and preventive measures to safeguard the region’s security. Beyond traffic monitoring, the system’s sophisticated features enable the detection of potential security threats and community order disturbances.
“We anticipate that this technology will enable us to take proactive steps in preventing criminal activities before they occur. Furthermore, we have received information from the National Police Headquarters that the system will soon be upgraded with AI technology to enhance its accuracy in detecting suspicious incidents,” Suwondo stated.
While the initial focus of the CCTV cameras in DIY was on crime prevention, the integration of 381 cameras into the Back Office Smart Province has expanded the scope of surveillance to include traffic monitoring. Plans are underway to install an additional 16 surveillance cameras equipped with specialized analytical features to monitor traffic flow and identify security risks at critical points, including congested holiday routes.
As the system continues to evolve with advanced integration and technological enhancements, officials anticipate a more effective monitoring of traffic and security in DIY. This proactive approach is particularly crucial in preparing for the influx of holiday travelers and increased community activities during extended vacation periods.
By fostering collaboration between government entities, leveraging cutting-edge technology, and prioritizing public safety, the DIY province is setting a precedent for smart city initiatives aimed at enhancing urban efficiency and security. The Back Office Smart Province stands as a testament to innovation and partnership in creating a safer and more resilient community.
The implementation of the Back Office Smart Province underscores the commitment of the DIY Provincial Government and the DIY Regional Police to harness technology for the collective well-being of the region. As the system continues to evolve and expand, it holds the promise of transforming urban management and law enforcement practices, setting a new standard for smart city development nationwide.
