Bus Driver MAS Identified as Suspect in Fatal Accidents in Batu City

In a tragic turn of events, the East Java Regional Police (Polda Jawa Timur) have officially named MAS, a 30-year-old tourist bus driver with license plate number DK 7942 GB, as the prime suspect in a series of fatal accidents that claimed the lives of four individuals in Batu City. According to Kombes Pol Komarudin, the Director of Traffic of East Java Regional Police, MAS has been charged under Article 311, paragraphs 3, 4, and 5 of the Republic of Indonesia Law Number 22 of 2022 concerning Traffic and Road Transport. The charges stem from the intentional act of operating a vehicle in a manner that endangers the safety of others, resulting in material losses, minor injuries, severe injuries, and fatalities, with a maximum penalty of 12 years in prison.

Investigation Reveals Faulty Brakes Contributed to the Tragedy

During the course of the investigation, authorities discovered that MAS had experienced abnormalities in the braking system while traveling from an event location back to Bali. Subsequent examinations conducted by the Department of Transportation revealed damage to both the right and left brake pads, as well as the brake drum, leading to suboptimal braking performance. Komarudin disclosed that despite pre-departure preparations on January 4, 2025, MAS had only conducted external inspections and was unaware of the brake pads’ condition.

Continued Scrutiny Due to Administrative Violations

Although MAS has been identified as a suspect, Komarudin emphasized that the investigation will persist due to additional findings of administrative violations, specifically the presence of an expired vehicle registration (STNK) and a lapsed Vehicle Fitness Test (KIR). These breaches underscore the importance of upholding regulatory standards to ensure road safety for all commuters.

This unfortunate incident serves as a sobering reminder of the critical role that maintenance and adherence to regulations play in averting road tragedies. As we reflect on this heartbreaking news, let us take a moment to appreciate the dedicated efforts of law enforcement agencies and regulatory bodies in safeguarding public welfare on the roads. Let us also extend our thoughts and prayers to the families and loved ones affected by this devastating loss. Remember, road safety is a shared responsibility that demands vigilance and compliance from all road users. Stay safe, stay informed, and stay committed to preventing further tragedies on our roads.
