DNA Samples of 13 Family Members of Glodok Plaza Fire Victims Received by RS Polri

Rumah Sakit Polri Kramat Jati in Jakarta has recently received 13 Deoxyribo Nucleic Acid (DNA) samples from the families of deceased and missing victims of the Glodok Plaza Taman Sari fire that occurred on Wednesday, January 15, 2025. As of Sunday, RS Polri has received eight body bags. Kabid DVI Rodokpol Pusdokkes Mabes Polri, Kombes Pol Ahmad Fauzi, stated, “We have received a total of 13 DNA samples up to today.” He mentioned that one family visited RS Polri today to provide necessary data such as documents and DNA samples. “This is the last family, and the mother or direct relative came to have the DNA sample taken,” he added.

Ensuring Data Accuracy through DNA Analysis

From all the collected samples, it will take one to two weeks to confirm the victim’s data match with their families. Fauzi explained, “It all depends on the DNA samples we collect. We may encounter difficulties due to the condition of the available DNA samples.” If the data is available, it will be processed to generate the victim’s profile. If not found, they will retest the samples until a result is obtained. “Once we have the results, we will determine whether it can be processed or not,” he emphasized.

Reliability of DNA Analysis in Victim Identification

Fauzi highlighted that DNA analysis is a highly reliable method, especially when other methods fail. DNA can provide a complete identity of the victim. “DNA can be ‘direct’ or ‘indirect.’ ‘Direct’ DNA comes from the victim’s personal belongings,” he elaborated. For instance, a toothbrush that is exclusively used by the victim. “But we need to ensure that it indeed belongs to the victim,” he added. Additionally, unwashed undergarments may contain DNA evidence. “Indirect DNA, on the other hand, comes from the family members,” he further explained.

Ongoing Search for Victims

The search for victims is still ongoing. Fauzi mentioned that the contents of the eight body bags could include either whole bodies or fragments from the surrounding structures. “Due to the burning condition, it is hard to distinguish visually, so a scientific approach is necessary to determine if it is a body or not,” he noted. This process involves scientific methods to identify the remains accurately.

The tragic incident at Glodok Plaza has brought immense sorrow to the affected families and the community. As we reflect on this heartbreaking event, let us remember the importance of safety measures and preparedness in preventing such disasters. Our thoughts and prayers are with all those impacted by this tragedy.
