Evaluation of Building Safety Certification Post Glodok Plaza Fire
In Jakarta, following a tragic fire incident at Glodok Plaza in West Jakarta that claimed several lives, the Jakarta Provincial Government is set to conduct a thorough evaluation of the safety certification standards in buildings across the city.
The Acting Governor of Jakarta, Teguh Setyabudi, has emphasized that the evaluation will cover various aspects, including safety standards in every building in Jakarta. He stated, “We will definitely review this fire incident, evaluating it from various variables and aspects. It is something that we must do, and we will also hold meetings with relevant stakeholders.”
Regular Safety Certification Checks
Meanwhile, the Acting Head of the Jakarta Fire and Rescue Agency, Satriadi Gunawan, highlighted that regular inspections of safety certifications are conducted annually. He mentioned, “By regulation, every building must have a fire safety certification that we check every year, particularly regarding its fire protection.”
Gunawan further added, “This is part of our efforts to provide guidance to buildings in Jakarta.”
Tragic Losses and Ongoing Evacuation Efforts
Prior to this evaluation, a significant fire broke out at Glodok Plaza in Mangga Besar, Jakarta, on Wednesday night. The incident primarily affected the discotheque on the 7th floor of Glodok Plaza, as stated by Satriadi Gunawan.
As of now, seven bodies have been evacuated from Glodok Plaza in West Jakarta following the fire. The most recent discovery was two bodies found on Friday around 6:00 PM.
Gunawan confirmed, “We have successfully evacuated a total of seven bodies.” The newly discovered bodies were taken to the RS Polri Kramat Jati to undergo identification. These bodies were found on the 8th floor, which housed entertainment venues such as discotheques and karaoke bars. Due to the severity of burns, identifying the victims has proven to be challenging.
As the authorities continue their investigation and recovery efforts, the community mourns the loss of lives and demands stricter enforcement of safety regulations to prevent such tragedies in the future. The incident serves as a grim reminder of the importance of stringent safety measures in public spaces to protect lives and property.
