Explaining the Sound of Explosion at Glodok Plaza Fire

Jakarta, Indonesia – A devastating fire broke out at Glodok Plaza in Taman Sari, Jakarta, in the early hours of Thursday, January 16, 2025. Firefighters rushed to the scene, deploying 44 fire trucks and 230 personnel to extinguish the blaze that engulfed the building. The fire reportedly originated from a nightclub on the seventh floor on Wednesday, January 15, around 9:22 PM local time. As of early Thursday, at around 2:33 AM, the fire was still raging inside Glodok Plaza. Fortunately, no casualties have been reported as authorities continue to investigate the cause of the fire.

Sound of Explosion

The sound of a loud explosion during the Glodok Plaza fire on Wednesday night startled residents and firefighters alike. The noise, coupled with shattered glass and debris falling outside the building due to the fire, added to the chaos at the scene. Firefighters explained that the explosion heard at Glodok Plaza was not caused by gas or vehicles but rather by the impact of falling debris. Syarifudin, the Head of Operations Section of the West Jakarta Fire and Rescue Service, clarified to reporters on Thursday that the loud noise resembled an explosion due to materials falling and hitting the floor, not an actual explosion from gas or vehicles.

Extent of Damage

The fire caused severe damage to floors 7, 8, and 9 at the rear and center of Glodok Plaza, although it did not spread to lower levels. Additionally, severe damage was reported on floors 3, 4, and 5 at the front of Glodok Plaza. Access to extinguish the fire in these areas was only possible through adjacent buildings that were also affected by the fire. Despite ruling out an explosion, authorities have yet to determine the exact cause of the fire, which originated on the 7th floor but remains under investigation.

Continued Efforts to Extinguish the Fire

Although the flames are no longer visible from outside the building, residual smoke from the fire continues to billow. Firefighters are tirelessly working on extinguishing the remnants of the fire, with ongoing efforts using five fire trucks and one bronto skylift unit. A total of 230 personnel and 45 fire vehicles are involved in the firefighting operation to ensure the safety and containment of the situation.

In times of crisis like the Glodok Plaza fire, the bravery and dedication of firefighters and emergency responders shine through as they risk their lives to protect others and prevent further devastation. Let’s take a moment to appreciate their selfless efforts and remember to support our local heroes who work tirelessly to keep our communities safe.
