YOGYAKARTA – On Tuesday, January 21, 2025, heavy rain wreaked havoc in the DIY region, leading to multiple landslides and the collapse of dozens of trees. Tragically, one resident lost their life due to a falling tree in Yogyakarta. The Head of the Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) in DIY, Noviar Rahmad, reported that the impact of the heavy rain was felt across Gunungkidul Regency, Yogyakarta City, Sleman Regency, and Kulon Progo Regency. Initial reports from Bantul indicated no incidents of landslides or tree falls, according to Noviar’s Situation Report released on Tuesday night.
### Impact in Gunungkidul
In Gunungkidul, the heavy rain on Tuesday affected various areas such as Kapanewon Karangmojo, Wonosari, Nglipar, Playen, Semanu, Semin, Ponjong, and Ngawen. Reports indicated 13 instances of fallen trees and one landslide in the region. Additionally, there were damages to the electrical network in seven areas, nine houses were reported damaged, one place of worship was affected, and access roads were impacted in four locations.
### Impact in Yogyakarta City
Yogyakarta City also faced repercussions from the heavy rain, with areas like Kemantren Umbulharjo, Pakualaman, and Gondokusuman being significantly affected. Five instances of fallen trees were reported, one of which resulted in a fatality as it collapsed on a resident.
### Impact in Sleman and Kulon Progo
In Sleman Regency, one tree fell in Kapanewon Sleman, affecting one residential unit. Meanwhile, in Kulon Progo Regency, the heavy rain led to landslides in Kapanewon Nanggulan, Kalibawang, Samigaluh, and Sentolo. This resulted in two damaged houses, two damaged house yards, and one damaged talud in the area. Two instances of fallen trees were reported, blocking access roads in one location and damaging a house in another.
