US Military Deploys Hercules C-130 and Navy Helicopters to Combat Wildfires in Los Angeles
In a swift response to the devastating wildfires ravaging Los Angeles, the US Department of Defense has mobilized a fleet of modified Hercules C-130 aircraft and Navy helicopters to aid in firefighting efforts. The fires, which broke out on Tuesday, have been exacerbated by strong Santa Ana winds, a recurring factor that intensifies wildfires in the region.
Mass Evacuations and Emergency Declarations
Governor Gavin Newsom declared a state of emergency in Los Angeles County as the fires rapidly spread, forcing tens of thousands of residents to evacuate their homes. To combat the blaze, over 600 personnel, 10 rotary-wing aircraft, and two C-130 Hercules aircraft from the California National Guard have been deployed.
Additionally, the US government has authorized the Pentagon to dispatch eight C-130 aircraft equipped with the Modular Airborne FireFighting System (MAFFS) from Nevada, Wyoming, and Colorado. These aircraft began firefighting operations on Friday after facing initial delays due to hazardous weather conditions.
From Cargo Planes to Firefighting Aircraft
The Lockheed C-130 Hercules, originally designed as a versatile cargo aircraft with a spacious cargo hold, has been repurposed for various operations, including firefighting missions. When configured as a firefighting aircraft, the C-130 can be outfitted with MAFFS units to support aerial firefighting operations alongside tanker aircraft.
MAFFS units can be loaded with water or a fire retardant substance known as “slurry,” composed of water mixed with ammonium sulfate, a gelling agent, and red dye to aid pilots in visualizing the spray pattern. The US military maintains eight MAFFS units nationwide, operated by National Guard units stationed in states like California, Nevada, Wyoming, and Colorado.
The MAFFS program was initiated by Congress in the 1970s following a major wildfire in Long Beach, California, which crippled the civilian aerial tanker fleet and resulted in the destruction of hundreds of homes.
