IRI Indonesia: Bioeconomy as a Solution to Climate Crisis

In North Minahasa, North Sulawesi, the aerial view of mangrove forests along the coastal region was a sight to behold on Thursday, August 25, 2022. These mangrove forests play a crucial role in our ecosystem as a natural barrier, a tourist attraction, and a habitat for diverse wildlife and marine life.

Focus Group Discussion on Bioeconomy Development

Jakarta, REPUBLIKA.CO.ID—Bioeconomy is seen as the future solution to global challenges such as the climate crisis, dependence on fossil fuels, and the loss of biodiversity. To expedite the transformation towards bioeconomy, the Interfaith Rainforest Initiative (IRI) Indonesia organized a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) on the theme of “Indonesia’s Bioeconomy Development.” The hybrid event was held on Friday, January 10, 2025, at the Indonesia Banking School Campus in Jakarta. It brought together various stakeholders from academia, government, business, local communities, and the media.

Dr. Hayu Prabowo, the National Facilitator of IRI Indonesia and the initiator of the FGD, emphasized that bioeconomy development is not just about utilizing biological resources but also ensuring sustainability and fairness in the process.

“Bioeconomy offers a new perspective on our natural resources, not just as something to be exploited but as the primary asset to build sustainability that benefits both humans and nature harmoniously,” he stated in a press release.

According to Hayu, the success of Indonesia’s bioeconomy transformation hinges on the pentahelix approach involving collaboration across sectors: academia, government, business, local communities, and the media.

“The government must create regulations that support sustainability. Academia provides the scientific foundation through research and innovation, while the business world and local communities are the main drivers in implementing bioeconomy,” he explained.

The Key Role of Collaboration in Bioeconomy

The collaborative effort across sectors is essential for the successful implementation of bioeconomy strategies. Each stakeholder brings a unique perspective and expertise to the table, creating a comprehensive approach to addressing environmental and economic challenges.

Looking Ahead: A Sustainable Future with Bioeconomy

As the world grapples with the urgent need for sustainable solutions to combat climate change and preserve biodiversity, bioeconomy emerges as a promising pathway towards a greener and more equitable future. By harnessing the power of nature and fostering collaboration among diverse stakeholders, Indonesia can pave the way for a thriving bioeconomy that benefits both people and the planet. Let’s join hands in shaping a sustainable tomorrow through bioeconomy innovation and cooperation.
