Jokowi Named Corrupt Leader by OCCRP, Urges Quick Response from KPK

Former Chairman of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK), Abraham Samad, has commented on the inclusion of the 7th President of Indonesia, Joko Widodo (Jokowi), in the list of corrupt leaders by the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP).

Abraham Samad believes that the KPK should respond quickly to Jokowi being labeled as a corrupt leader. He warns that if the KPK remains silent and fails to take action, the public may view them negatively. There is a risk that the new KPK commissioners could be perceived as Jokowi’s allies if the KPK does not address this issue promptly.

“It is essential for the KPK to respond swiftly because remaining passive will not suffice,” said Abraham Samad on Thursday (2/1/2025), as reported by WartaKotalive.com.

It is worth noting that Jokowi is not the only leader listed by OCCRP as a corrupt figure. The list also includes President of Kenya William Ruto, President of Nigeria Bola Ahmed Tinubu, former Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina, and Indian businessman Gautam Adani.

OCCRP compiled the names of corrupt leaders by soliciting nominations from readers, journalists, judges, and other parties within their global network. The organization, headquartered in Amsterdam, the Netherlands, began collecting nominations via Google Form on Friday, November 22, 2024.

From the submissions, former President of Syria Bashar Al Assad was named Person of the Year 2024 in the category of organizational crime and corruption.

In response to his inclusion in the list, Jokowi has urged the public to provide evidence of the corruption he is accused of committing during his tenure.

“What exactly was corrupted? It should be proven, right?” Jokowi challenged.

With allegations of corruption swirling, it is crucial for the KPK to act swiftly and decisively to maintain public trust and integrity in the fight against corruption. The implications of these accusations extend beyond individual reputations to the broader perception of governmental accountability and transparency. The KPK’s response will be closely monitored by citizens and stakeholders alike, as the nation grapples with the complex issue of corruption at the highest levels of leadership.
