Tottenham Hotspur’s coach Ange Postecoglou, in a press conference on Tuesday (20/5/2025) before the Europa League final, brushed off questions about his future at the London club. He was visibly annoyed, rejecting the notion that he is some sort of clown in the team. Postecoglou made it clear that his focus is solely on winning the first European trophy for Tottenham in 41 years and their first trophy since 2008, ahead of the final against Manchester United at San Mames Stadium in Bilbao on Thursday (22/5/2025) in the wee hours of the morning.
“I’m not really sure why this matters, but my future is secure, mate,” Postecoglou told reporters, as his team endured their worst domestic season in nearly 50 years. “I’m not the first one to switch jobs. I have a lovely family. I have a great life. Don’t waste your sleep time thinking about it.” The last European trophy Spurs won was the UEFA Cup in 1984, while their last domestic trophy was the English League Cup in 2008. The coach, speaking passionately about his parents’ journey from Greece to Australia, emphasized that his main focus is to seize the opportunity to deliver something special for Tottenham and their supporters.
“Maybe it’s just me, but nothing that happens after tomorrow is really relevant if you think about the opportunity presented to us right now,” Postecoglou said. “It’s been years since I’ve won a trophy. If I were worried about my tenure at this club, it’s only fair to say that we wouldn’t be in this position because I’d be too distracted by things that don’t matter.” Postecoglou stressed that he has not discussed his future with his players. He reacted angrily at one point, in response to a newspaper article stating that he would be seen as either a hero or a clown. In the end, the only thing that matters is the game and the chance to make history for Tottenham.
