President Prabowo Subianto has given strict instructions to his team to use local raw materials for the Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) program, involving cooperatives and village-owned enterprises (BUMDes).

During a meeting with Prabowo at the Bogor Palace on Friday (1/3/2025), Minister of Cooperatives, Budi Arie Setiadi, revealed this directive.

“The President’s instruction is that the raw materials for MBG must come from Indonesia, from villages, to boost the local economy. Not imports,” said Budi.

Budi outlined that they will engage thousands of cooperatives to ensure the success of the government’s flagship program. He also mentioned that they have identified villages producing various commodities to support MBG.

“There are 1,923 cooperatives ready to participate and contribute to the implementation of free nutritious meals,” Budi said.

“This includes egg cooperatives, vegetable cooperatives, rice cooperatives, fish cooperatives, and so on,” he added.

Additionally, Budi noted that villages are contributing to producing various necessities such as corn, tilapia fish, and melons. He stated that this contribution is part of the 20% of village funds allocated for food security.

Coordinating with Cooperatives

Budi emphasized the importance of involving cooperatives in the MBG program to ensure the utilization of local resources and stimulate economic growth in rural areas. By partnering with cooperatives, the government aims to create a sustainable supply chain for nutritious meals while empowering local communities.

Supporting Local Economies

The decision to source raw materials locally not only benefits the MBG program but also has a positive impact on the Indonesian economy. By prioritizing domestic products, the government is fostering economic growth, promoting self-sufficiency, and reducing dependency on imports.

Promoting Food Security

Through the involvement of cooperatives and village-owned enterprises, the MBG program is not only addressing immediate nutritional needs but also contributing to long-term food security. By encouraging local production and distribution, the government is enhancing food availability and accessibility for all Indonesians.

In conclusion, President Prabowo’s directive to utilize local raw materials for the MBG program reflects a strategic approach to promoting economic development, empowering rural communities, and ensuring food security for the nation. By harnessing the resources available within Indonesia, the government is taking a significant step towards building a more resilient and sustainable food system for the future.
