Preventing Hypertension During Pregnancy: Tips and Precautions
In a recent report by TRIBUNNEWS.COM, it was highlighted that hypertension during pregnancy is the leading cause of maternal deaths in Indonesia, accounting for a staggering 33 percent. This condition, characterized by elevated blood pressure levels in expectant mothers, poses serious complications if left unchecked.
Dr. Carlinda Nekawaty, Head of Medical Affairs at Pyfagrou, emphasized the potential risks associated with hypertension during pregnancy. These risks include miscarriage, premature birth, organ damage, and placental abruption, where the placenta separates from the uterine wall.
The Importance of Prevention
Dr. Carlinda underscored that hypertension during pregnancy often occurs in the second or third trimester. However, adopting a healthy lifestyle can help prevent this condition. Measures such as reducing salt intake, attending regular antenatal check-ups at least three times during pregnancy, consuming nutritious foods rich in protein, vegetables, and fruits, as well as engaging in light exercise as recommended by a doctor, can significantly lower the risk of developing hypertension.
Nutritional Recommendations
She also recommended specific dietary guidelines to prevent hypertension during pregnancy. These include consuming low-salt, high-fiber foods rich in nutrients like potassium found in bananas, potatoes, and spinach, as well as magnesium from vegetables, nuts, and grains. Additionally, a diet high in protein is essential for expectant mothers to maintain a healthy blood pressure level.
Exercise as a Preventative Measure
In addition to a balanced diet, incorporating light exercises such as prenatal yoga, walking, and swimming can improve blood circulation and stabilize blood pressure levels during pregnancy. The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends at least 30 minutes of daily exercise for pregnant women, with moderate intensity.
Commitment to Maternal Health
Pyfagroup is currently conducting research to develop medical solutions aimed at preventing hypertension during pregnancy. This research focuses on creating safe products and innovative medications for both mothers and fetuses. Merciana Evy Iswari, Director of PT Ethica Industri Farmasi, emphasized the company’s dedication to improving maternal health through high-quality health products and public health education initiatives.
By continuously educating the public and advancing medical innovation, the goal is to significantly reduce maternal and infant mortality rates caused by hypertension during pregnancy. The commitment to maternal health is not just a responsibility but an investment in the future of the nation. Through ongoing education and medical innovation, positive impacts on the health of pregnant women in Indonesia can be achieved.
