Proposed Formula for Selecting Local Leaders by DPRD – Tribunnews.com
JAKARTA – The Chairman of the Golkar Party, Bahlil Lahadalia, has once again proposed a change in the system for selecting regional heads (Pilkada) from direct election to being chosen by the Regional Representatives Council (DPRD). He has put forward a formulation that could be used by the country in the future.
Bahlil suggested that this change in the Pilkada system could apply from the level of governors, mayors, to regents. However, the presidential election (Pilpres) would still be conducted through direct voting. He emphasized that candidates for regional heads who would be selected by the DPRD must have high public approval ratings.
According to Bahlil, a discussion would take place before the candidates entered the selection process by the DPRD. It is crucial to conduct surveys first. The individuals’ figures would be evaluated through these surveys before being proposed to the public by political parties. This process would resemble a convention.
Bahlil explained that conventions were unwritten rules based on national customs and agreements. Political parties would offer a number of names to the public, following which a semi-conventional process would take place. Golkar, being an experienced party in organizing conventions and executing their outcomes, could handle this effectively.
Furthermore, Bahlil claimed that this formula would still respect the principles and democratic rights of the Indonesian people. He stated that the public would continue to be involved in the Pilkada process, ensuring that democracy was upheld.
Golkar has always been committed to initiating changes in democracy, but in a constructive, academic manner that can be implemented while respecting the democratic rights of the people, he concluded.
