TRAGEDY STRIKES AS SPEEDBOAT CAPSIZES IN MALUKU: 8 LIVES LOST
In a heartbreaking incident off the coast of Tanjung Samala, Pulau Manipa, West Seram Regency, Maluku, on Friday (1/3/2025), a speedboat named 2 Nona sailing from Manipa to Ambon City capsized around 10:00 a.m. Local Time.
According to Wardi, a resident of Manipa who was contacted, the speedboat tilted before ultimately flipping over. “Yes, speedboat 2 Nona capsized. We are assisting in bringing the victims to the shore,” Wardi revealed during the call on Friday.
Despite the sea being calm and waveless at the time of the incident, the speedboat is suspected to have collided with a wooden log. “Earlier, a survivor mentioned that the speedboat hit a wooden log and then capsized,” Wardi stated.
The Chief of Police of Pulau Manipa, Ipda Edwin Ricardo Mangare, confirmed that there were approximately 30 passengers on board at that time. Among them, eight individuals were declared deceased. “The deceased include two individuals from Lubu Tuban Hamlet, two from Pilar, two from Pasir Putih Hamlet, and two from Tahalupu Village,” Edwin explained.
Many of the victims were trapped inside the speedboat when it sank. Other passengers were rescued thanks to the assistance of local residents who utilized a longboat. “The residents immediately worked to save the victims using a longboat,” he added.
