Penindakan Merokok di Malioboro: Denda Maksimal Rp7,5 Juta
In a groundbreaking move aimed at maintaining cleanliness and health in the iconic tourist area of Malioboro, the government of Yogyakarta City will strictly enforce the No Smoking Area (KTR) regulation. Starting in the first semester of 2025, violators of this rule will face on-the-spot trials and a hefty fine of up to Rp7.5 million.

The crackdown will involve immediate on-site trials for offenders at specific locations in Malioboro, which will include the district court, public prosecutor’s office, and local police in Yogyakarta. Under Regional Regulation (Perda) Number 2 of 2017 regarding KTR, both local residents and tourists caught smoking indiscriminately in Malioboro face a maximum fine of Rp7.5 million.
KTR Enforcement Regulation Officer of Yogyakarta City, Dodi Kurnianto, emphasized that judges will determine penalties based on the regulation, including fines or imprisonment if the fine is not paid. Despite the strict enforcement, the focus remains on coaching through verbal and written warnings. Since the beginning of the year until January 20, 2025, a total of 200 individuals were caught smoking in the central shopping and tourist area of Gudeg City, all of whom received verbal and written warnings.
Equal Treatment for Tourists and Locals
Out of the 200 violators, 187 were tourists from outside the area, while 13 were local residents. Dodi reassured that both tourists and locals will be treated equally under the regulation, even when the maximum fine of Rp7.5 million is enforced. In addition to installing no smoking signs in various locations, there are currently over 15 designated smoking areas in Malioboro, established by both the government and private entities.
