Climate Protest Sweeps Europe
Activists took to the streets in a powerful climate protest at Frankfurt Airport, Germany, on Thursday (25/7/2024). The call for action on environmental issues has reverberated across several European countries, demanding government officials to prioritize climate change concerns.
In a unified effort, environmental organization Extinction Rebellion staged a protest at Inverness Airport in Scotland. Prior to this, thousands of people rallied in Germany to raise climate awareness ahead of the upcoming general election scheduled for February 23. According to STV, on Saturday (15/2/2025) in Scotland, Extinction Rebellion urged an end to private jet flights during their demonstration. Similarly, another environmental group, Scientist Rebellion, held a similar protest at Billund Airport in Denmark. The day before, on Friday (14/2/2025), as reported by Euronews, thousands of German activists took to the streets to heighten climate awareness in the lead-up to the general election. They criticized the lack of emphasis on climate issues in an election dominated by immigration and economic concerns.
Displaying banners that read “Rights for the future, not the (right-wing) future,” protesters marched in Berlin, near the parliamentary building. The demonstration was organized by Friday for Future, a youth-led climate movement focused on promoting climate crisis awareness and advocating for change. The protest had been announced on the official Friday for Future website since November of the previous year. The group reported that 100,000 individuals participated in protests at 150 locations across Germany. These protests occurred just over a week before German citizens headed to the polls to cast their votes in what has been described as the most crucial election in German history. The right-wing Alternative for Germany (AfD) party appears poised to achieve its strongest national election results this month.
The AfD has frequently opposed environmentally-friendly policies, expressing a reluctance to take action to address the crisis. Polls indicate that the AfD is positioned to secure the second-highest number of votes as the national election draws near, projected to garner around 20 percent of the vote.
