In July 2025, the Ministry of Social Affairs (Kemensos) is set to launch the Sekolah Rakyat program across 53 locations in Indonesia. This initiative aims to provide quality education for children from low-income families, with a focus on those in the first and second deciles of the National Socio-Economic Single Data (DTSEN). The program, discussed during a meeting at the Merdeka Palace in Jakarta on Monday, is undergoing final preparations to ensure a smooth rollout for the 2025-2026 academic year.

Planning and Preparation

During the meeting, President Prabowo Subianto, along with his Cabinet Ministers, delved into various aspects of the program, including selecting suitable locations, designing the curriculum, and securing necessary resources and support systems. Minister of Social Affairs Saifullah Yusuf (Gus Ipul) reported that 53 locations have been identified to host the Sekolah Rakyat program, each equipped to deliver quality education services.

Gus Ipul emphasized that the program is ready to kick off as early as July 2025 in regions with the necessary infrastructure and support systems in place. “We are prepared in terms of facilities and infrastructure at 41 centers and facilities owned by Kemensos. Additionally, there are 9 locations in East Java, 2 at universities, and 1 in West Sumatra, totaling 53 sites that are ready,” he stated. The seamless collaboration between various ministries and local governments underscores the collective effort to ensure the success of this groundbreaking initiative.

Empowering Through Education

Sekolah Rakyat will offer free, quality education for students in primary, junior high, and senior high school levels, adhering to national educational standards. Beyond traditional subjects, the curriculum will focus on character development, leadership skills, nationalism, and practical abilities. In line with its inclusive ethos, the program will cater to all the needs of the students, including uniforms, meals, and accommodation in student dormitories.

The holistic approach of Sekolah Rakyat aims to break the cycle of poverty by empowering children from underprivileged backgrounds. By providing a nurturing environment conducive to learning and growth, this initiative not only uplifts the students but also aligns with the broader vision of Indonesia Emas 2045. The goal is to create a model of inclusive education that fosters social mobility and national development.

As the recruitment of students and teachers is scheduled to commence at the end of March or early April 2025, pending presidential approval, the program is gearing up for a transformative impact. “If everything goes according to plan, registrations will open within the next one to two months,” Gus Ipul remarked. This meticulous planning and coordination reflect the dedication and commitment of all stakeholders involved in realizing the vision of Sekolah Rakyat.

In conclusion, the upcoming launch of the Sekolah Rakyat program represents a significant milestone in Indonesia’s education landscape. By providing equal opportunities for quality education to children from marginalized communities, the initiative embodies the spirit of inclusivity and empowerment. As the nation prepares to embark on this educational journey, the collaborative efforts of government entities, local authorities, and educational stakeholders underscore a unified commitment to building a brighter future for all Indonesian youth.
