Heavy equipment workers are working on the Ciliwung River normalization project in the Cawang area of Jakarta on Friday (6/1/2023). The Jakarta Provincial Government has officially declared the location of three areas to continue the Ciliwung River normalization program. The land acquisition for the Ciliwung River normalization is set to begin next month. Governor of Jakarta, Pramono Anung, emphasized the importance of the river normalization program as nearly 40 percent of flood causes in Jakarta are due to the overflow of the Ciliwung River. “We’ve got the locations nailed down,” he said in North Jakarta on Monday (19/5/2025).
Pramono mentioned that the initial three areas for land acquisition are in the Pengadegan, Cawang, and Cililitan areas. In addition to these three areas, seven more locations will also be freed up. This means that the Jakarta Provincial Government will determine a total of 11 land acquisition locations for the Ciliwung River normalization. “This means the Ciliwung River normalization will be carried out, and hopefully, we’ll receive the letter from the Ministry of Public Works soon, with the assistance of the National Land Agency, we will tackle the main flood issue in Jakarta, the Ciliwung River, seriously,” stated Pramono. Meanwhile, the Acting Head of the Jakarta Provincial Water Resources Department, Ika Agustin Ningrum, disclosed that they have allocated a budget of Rp 98 billion for the Ciliwung River normalization program, with the possibility of an increase in the budget. “We are currently in discussions with the Regional Representatives Council regarding the 2025 Regional Budget, and we might just add more to it,” she mentioned. The land acquisition process is likely to commence in the Pengadegan area, pending the assignment letter from the Ministry of Agrarian and Spatial Planning/National Land Agency. “At the latest, by the end of June, we should have the payment processed in the Pengadegan segment,” Ika added.
With heavy equipment operators making headway on the Ciliwung River normalization project in Cawang, Jakarta, the Jakarta Provincial Government is gearing up to kick off land acquisitions in three key areas next month. Governor Pramono Anung stressed the urgency of the normalization program, citing the Ciliwung River as a major contributor to flooding in Jakarta. The government has identified a total of 11 locations for land acquisitions, with a budget of Rp 98 billion set aside for the project. Despite uncertainties regarding budget adjustments, officials remain optimistic about the progress and impact of the initiative.
