Empowering Youth to Protect the Ocean with Ocean Literacy in Tanjung Sekong

JAKARTA — PT Pertamina International Shipping (PIS) has kicked off the year 2025 with a concrete step to preserve the environment through an educational program called Ocean LiteraSEA. This program took place at SDN Tanjung Sekong, Cilegon, Banten, as an effort to raise awareness among the younger generation about the importance of conserving the marine ecosystem, especially in coastal areas.

Symbolic Commitment to Sustainable Seas

Ocean LiteraSEA began with a symbolic handover of a mural painting, symbolizing the collective commitment to keeping the ocean sustainable. The educational session included lectures to students about marine cleanliness and training on creating crafts from marine debris. A total of 50 students from SDN Tanjung Sekong actively participated in this activity, accompanied by 20 SH IML officers who are part of the SEAnergy Volunteers team.

Real Actions for a Sustainable Future

In addition to education, tangible actions were taken through beach clean-ups, mangrove planting, and empowering coastal communities. This step is part of PIS’s significant initiative to support the sustainability of the marine ecosystem in Indonesia. Since its launch in 2023, the Ocean LiteraSEA program has reached over 5,000 students in 49 schools across Indonesia, including the construction and renovation of 9 school libraries. The program is also aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

Commitment to a Better Future

Looking ahead, PIS is committed to expanding the program’s coverage to more schools and communities in coastal areas of Indonesia, integrating education and real actions to create a better ocean for the future. Corporate Secretary PIS, Muhammad Baron, emphasized that Ocean LiteraSEA is a testament to the company’s commitment to supporting marine education and environmental conservation. “We hope this program can inspire the younger generation to actively participate in preserving the maritime ecosystem, not only in Tanjung Sekong but also in other coastal areas,” said Baron.

In conclusion, the Ocean LiteraSEA program stands as a crucial step in strengthening PIS’s role as a pioneer in sustainable marine ecosystem preservation, while also supporting the global vision of creating healthy and productive oceans for future generations.
